Special Guests and Tuna Steaks/Jaws

Japanese food galore! I guess I'm on a kick.

I got really excited when some friends contacted me to be guest contributors to the blog. I was happy about being able to hang with some cool kids for the night, but I was also really stoked that people took an interest! If anybody else in MA wants to be included in pretty much the hottest blog around, let me know. Recommendations of movie/food pairings are also taken into consideration.

Special guest Mario!
Special guest Maggie!

Also, a lot of the food from this entry was reused from the last one. The tuna recipe was inspired by this. The tuna was purchased from a fishmonger in Inman Square and HOLYCOW it was good. Jiro would be proud.

Recipe: Tuna Steaks with Leftover Rice and more Spicy Miso Soup

Ingredients:

1/2 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup wasabi powder
2 lbs sushi-grade tuna
1/2 cup sesame seeds

leftover sushi rice (recipe in previous entry)
leftover seaweed salad (recipe also in previous entry)
green onions
radishes
soy sauce
wasabi powder

spicy miso soup (recipe also also in previous entry)

Directions:

Chop tuna into chunks. Marinade in soy sauce, honey, and wasabi powder for about 30 minutes (longer is better, but that's all the time we had). Heat a pan on the stove. Roll the tuna in sesame seeds. Sear the tuna on the pan. It should be pink in the center. Slice into bite sized pieces. Serve with soy sauce and wasabi.

For the rice, simply mix it all together. We served it cold and it accompanied the tuna really well. The spicy miso soup was a great appetizer too - especially on these cold days we've been having.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Slice the tuna into chunks

Marinade in soy sauce, wasabi, and honey

Roll in sesame seeds

Make sure you're drinking lots of wine.

Sear until browned on the outside. The pieces should still be pink on the inside.
Slice into bite sized pieces.
Assemble the rice by mixing everything together.
Make the soup according to the last entry.
Proper plating is essential. Eat up!

Review (not really): Jaws

duuuh-nuh

So everybody has seen this movie. If you haven't, here's a review to satisfy you. Instead, I'm going to give you Jaws facts! In case you want to play trivia or something.

  1. Jaws kickstarted the "from the monster's perspective" filming technique.
  2. Also the first "Summer Blockbuster", making room for Star Wars further on down the road.
  3. George Lucas got his head stuck inside the shark's head while messing around.
  4. The film was blamed for reduced beach attendance in 1975.
  5. Brody's dog in the movie was Spielberg's real dog.
  6. Some claim that the reason why many sharks are endangered is due to the "Jaws Effect"
  7. In the book there is quite a bit of mob presence.
  8. The sharks themselves were roughly a quarter of the budget of the movie.
Ok I'm sick of this list. Hope you learned something today.
